General Conference was wonderful- especially the Saturday sessions (that may be because I'm "fresh" on Saturday- by Sunday afternoon I'm burned out!). Of course the big excitement was about the changes in mission age- from 19 to 18 for boys and from 21 to 19 for girls. That mixes things up around here a bit!
I love that this change will make it easier and more likely for my girls to serve. I know they don't have a priesthood obligation to serve, but why wouldn't I want them to have the experience, competence, and testimony that come from serving a mission? They will be the mothers of my grandchildren, and I want them to be prepared! I know from experience that those few months on a mission change the life of the missionary for the better faster than many more years of "real world living".
In the past, although I've always encouraged my girls to serve, I have been reluctant to use the same wording as I do with my boys... "If you serve" instead of "When you serve". That changed on Saturday.* We have already figured out when everyone could be gone- how old the other kids will be.... Eliza is going to grow up in a family of missionaries!
Rebekah can go in 2 1/2 years! And the twins a year after that. That's a little hard to wrap my head around, but I am so excited for them.
Now if we can just get Josh to eat beans so he won't starve when he gets called to Central America.... :)
*I hope this doesn't sound like I'm forcing my children into going on missions. That is not my intent at all. At this point, they are all excited about the prospect, and I just want to encourage that. Missionary service is a wonderful thing!
